• <H4> Hey Creative People! Miha here! I’m a graphic designer, website designer and a motion artist, but also a freelance business owner. Here’s my story:
• <H4> I started out as most graphic designers fresh out of college and got a job at an advertising agency. So there I was designing logos, brochures and creating animations. But there was a thing lacking, I didn’t have the freedom to create what I really wanted. All the art direction and pressure from my boss lead me to create work that I wasn’t really proud of. Don’t get me wrong, the work was good by industry standards, clients were happy and the agency was making money, but it was eating away at my soul. So I decided to quit that job and got another one at a smaller agency that was run by a good friend of mine at that time. I thought things were going to get better. Guess again. I was also working long hours (10+ a day) and barely got any vacation due to deadlines and the company pressure. This didn’t help since I am really big on surfing and other sports that actually need free time to do. I actually had a surf trip planned but the day before my plane, my boss called me and said that there is a really important client coming to a meeting on Monday and that I have to be there. So I had a big decision to make and thankfully I made the right one - I went surfing. And the next day when I was on the ride to the airport the boss called me and asked me why I’m late. I thought about not picking up the phone, but that would be irrsponsible so I made one of the best decisions in my life and told him that I was going surfing and stood my ground. He was actually really upset and said that we need to talk about this when I come back.
• <H4> So I went surfing, had the most awesome time in that year and forgot all about my job related worries for that week - the ocean really can be magic. But all things come to an end and when I got back, reality kicked in. It was time to go to work on Monday and the old soul draining thoughts were starting to creep into my mind again. So I had another decision to make.
• <H4> I was already thinking about going fully freelance by that time. So I actually never went back to my agency job. I had a couple of clients on the side and thought that I can make it on my own by designing graphics and animations for my own clients. For the first time since my first agency job I was actually really starting to feel my passion for the work again and I was working on my own clients. So it was a great time for the next couple of months but then... Due to my inexperience on the business side of things I was working for rates that were actually too low to support the things I wanted to do besides my job. I was barely making it through the month with all the business expenses and bills. And it also didn’t help that I was working with clients from Slovenia, which is basically an eastern european country with very low income rates and client’s that don’t necessarily want to pay much for creative work.
• <H4> I had a pretty good portfolio at the time so I got this idea...what if I start looking for clients online and get creative projects that actually pay? But where do I start?
• <H4> So I started doing extensive research, I joined numerous marketing groups, paid for some masterminds and took waaaaaay too much advice from motivational coaches like Tony Robbins and Garyvee. I also tried to do some projects on portals like Freelancer and UpWork. It basically took me a lot of trial and error, successes and mistakes to find out a way that has helped me to build my own client base and actually get projects from online clients. In the last couple of years, I started my own animation business and have worked with some of the biggest startup companies in the industry (like Uphold, BitStamp and Rapidfire to name just a few). I was also involved in a couple of startup ventures that I started with my partners, some have failed and on some we are still working on, but that is another story. My business life has been a complete rollercoaster with successes and failures, but I would never had imagined being a freelancer can be so much fun once you get the hang of it. I have to admit, it wasn’t easy starting out and getting clients from the other part of the world and if I knew some of the things back then I would certantly do some things differently, because the business side of things was completely new to me and I had to learn a lot of things to find out what works and what doesn’t.
